Species Name: Swainson's Lorikeet
Trichoglossus haematodus moluccanus

Average Adult Size: 12 in.
Diet: Nectar and pollen but also fruit such as figs and mangos, berries, beetles and small grubs.
Habitat: Forest, coconut plantations, savanna, eucalyptus stands and mangroves at islands in Torres Strait and East Australia.

Shot: Taken at the Oregon Zoo.

Comments: Curious but extremely beautiful birds. Keep dangly earings and bracelets in your bag when going to meet them.

Ooh, we used to have one of these....well, it didn't have the black, but it was a rainbow lorikeet. They are beautiful birds, but can be very vicious.

he's beautiful! we have them at the zoo near my house and they always get into fights as to who gets to drink out of the nectar cup
