Species Name: American Kestrel or "Sparrowhawk"
Falco sparverius

Average Adult Size: 8 3/4-10 1/2 inches
Diet: Small rodents, reptiles, insects, and an occasional small bird.
Habitat: Variety of habitats from ocean level to high mountains. Every type from marshlands to grasslands to deserts to pine forests. Their distribution is throughout the Western hemisphere from within the Arctic circle in Northern Alaska and Canada to South America.

Shot: Taken at the Oregon Zoo

Comments: This is a male. American Kestrels are one of the few birds of prey who's sex can be determined by coloration. The dead giveaway is the grayish-blue band on his wing and head. They are one of the most widely distributed and common falcons.
